Lopetegui and Ramos disappointed with Madrid´s first dropped points

Julen Lopetegui and Sergio Ramos both refused to credit a comeback draw at Athletic Bilbao as a good result for Real Madrid.

Lopetegui s side dropped points for the first time this season after Isco s header cancelled out Iker Muniain s scrambled opener at San Mames on Saturday.

Earlier in the day Barcelona had also been forced to come from behind, but a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad means the champions have a two-point lead at the top.

And Lopetegui, who missed the chance to become the first Madrid coach to win his first four league games since Manuel Pellegrini in 2009-10, could not be happy with his side s draw.

It s a very difficult place to come, Lopetegui said to Movistar Partidazo.

Prediction: Bologna vs Genoa

Best Odds: 12/11

Bookmaker:

Hoping to make an immediate return to winning ways on Friday night, Bologna will welcome Genoa to the Stadio Renato Dall Ara.

Bologna

Starting with the hosts, while Bologna have continued to gain a string of plaudits among Italy’s elite this season, the Greyhounds certainly signed off 2023 with a nightmare display. Eventually slumping to a shock 3-0 drumming at the hands of Udinese, Thiago Motta’s men are seeking an immediate response here. Nevertheless, extending on their Coppa Italia adventure last month as they secured a famous 2-1 victory away at Serie A title contenders Inter Milan, the one-time Genoa boss will be smelling the chance to get one over on his former employers this weekend. Losing just one of their previous seve…

Newcastle have ambition to be number one – Yasir Al-Rumayyan

Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan says the club are now aiming to be “number one” after their transformation from relegation strugglers to Champions League participants.

The Magpies finished fourth in the Premier League and reached the Carabao Cup final last season, just over a year they had been battling to get out of the bottom three.

The catalyst for the improvement was the club’s takeover by the Saudi-led consortium headed by Al-Rumayyan and Amanda Staveley in 2021.

Bruno Fernandes wants Man Utd to use ‘special’ win over Liverpool as spark

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes is determined to end a poor season on a high after Sunday’s jaw-dropping and “spicy” FA Cup quarter-final win against Liverpool.

His strike sparked wild celebrations and secured an FA Cup semi-final against Coventry, breathing new life into a season that had threatened to go into a tailspin.

Asked if he had ever seen scenes like that at Old Trafford before, captain Fernandes said: “I think the last year probably against Liverpool, it was the turnaround of last season and kind of the same.

Varane takes blame for defeat to Manchester City

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane took the blame for this side s Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester City on Friday.

Pep Guardiola s side won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium to claim a 4-2 aggregate victory and reach the quarter-finals, where they will face Lyon.

Raheem Sterling put City ahead after Varane lost possession to Gabriel Jesus in just the ninth minute of the game.

Karim Benzema equalised but Jesus restored City s advantage after Varane made a mess of a header and then failed to nod the ball back to Thibaut Courtois.

It was a rare poor performance from the France international, who was without usual centre-back partner Sergio Ramos due to suspension, and he was prepared to accept responsibility.

This defeat is mine. I have to …

Spalletti concedes Scudetto race out of Napoli´s hands after Fiorentina loss

Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti conceded the race for the Scudetto was no longer in his side s hands after they fell to a 3-2 loss to Fiorentina.

Dries Mertens cancelled out Nico Gonzalez s first-half opener at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, before Jonathan Ikone and Arthur Cabral put the visitors two goals to the good.

Victor Osimhen pulled one back in the closing stages for Spalletti s side, but his efforts were ultimately in vain as Napoli succumbed to their sixth league loss this season, five of which came at home.

The defeat leaves them level on points with defending champions Inter, who have played a game fewer, and two behind Serie A leaders Milan ahead of the Rossoneri facing Torino on Sunday evening.

With that deficit in mind, a visibly disa…
